A Leadership Race Initiated | Feb 3, 2022

For Immediate Release
February 3,2022

Ottawa, ON: Last night, the Conservative Caucus voted to initiate a Leadership race to determine the next Leader of the Conservative Party. I look forward to hearing from the people of Essex as they share their vision of a Conservative Leader that would represent them well, in opposition and into the next federal election.

During my short time as a Member of Parliament, I have gained a new appreciation for the challenges of the position as Leader of her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. There is nothing easy about this job. I would like to thank Erin O’Toole for his commitment and willingness to serve Canada, in the Royal Canadian Air Force, as the MP for Durham, as a Minister in Prime Minister, Steven Harper’s Cabinet and as the Leader of the Official Opposition. Thank you, also, to Rebecca, Mollie and Jack for their sacrifice that allowed Erin to serve his community and his country.

As we move forward, Conservatives need a strong leader to re-unify our party in the Big Blue Tent, to inspire confidence in our vision for the future and to be a strong voice for Canadians in our government and around the world. I look forward to hearing from those that choose to join the Leadership race.

In the interim, our Caucus has elected Hon. Candice Bergen, MP as our Leader through this transition. I am confident that Ms. Bergen will do an excellent job leading our party with the professionalism, boldness and integrity that is characteristic of her in her role as MP for Portage-Lisgar and as Deputy House Leader.

I will continue to represent the people of Essex with the utmost respect, care and compassion. I am excited for our future. In the coming weeks and months, we will have strong and healthy conversations. I look forward to showing Canada that Conservatives are indeed ready to govern.

My focus remains – a unified Party and a unified Canada.
