Lest we forget! In perilous times, they left the comforts of home and country to fight for our freedom. In these unprecedented times, we pause to remember their sacrifice. Our own pales in comparison.
It is sad that we cannot gather, as we have in the past, to honour those that gave so much. Soldiers in the flower of their youth, who risked their lives, many thousands that lost them. Families, mothers, fathers, spouses, children, who bid their loved Ones farewell, not knowing if or when they would return – all so we could be free from tyranny. We must not let the significance of their sacrifice be forgotten.
Somme. Vimy. Dieppe. Passchendaele, Normandy. Places that we may never go but are so significant in the story of our freedom.
‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Wise words, we would do well to heed.
We, who have said “never again”, must be faithful to share this history with our children and our children’s children into perpetuity, so those words, which embody so much horror, tragedy and loss, becomes our resolve and our hope for all future generations to come.
“At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.” Their selfless service and sacrifice can never be repaid. We owe them a debt of gratitude. We will not forget.
