Conservatives Propose Additional Support for Seniors Affected by COVID-19 | May 13, 2020

Yesterday, PM Trudeau announced long promised measures to support seniors – included was $2.5 billion for a one-time tax-free payment of $300 (OAS) and $200 (GIS) for eligible seniors.

When asked, “why so little and so late”, PM Trudeau’s response was “Seniors are not generally in a situation where they have lost their income”. That may be true, but seniors on fixed incomes are facing rapidly rising cost for food, increased dispensing fees, an increase in the carbon tax on fuel, and additional costs due to the pandemic as a result of the loss of support services such as free laundry and food delivery.

We must do better by our seniors. I think especially of those in long-term care who have borne the brunt of this pandemic.

Please note: you do not need to apply for this payment. It will automatically be sent to all those who already qualify for OAS and/or GIS.
