Bill C-3 | Oct 1, 2020

The federal government has reintroduced the Hon. Rona Ambrose’s bill (the JUST Act), as Bill C-3, An Act to amend the Judges Act and the Criminal Code. The new legislation reflects the amendments passed by the Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs before the last election.

If passed, the legislation will require judges to participate in continuing legal education with regards to sexual assault law.

The Canadian judiciary must be held accountable and ensure that judges have the updated training Canadians expect them to have. That is why we committed in our recent election platform to ensure that all judicial appointees take sexual assault sensitivity training prior to taking the bench.

Canada’s Conservatives were proud to support the JUST Act in the last Parliament because we recognize that far too often the justice system fails to respect the experiences of victims of sexual assault. We would like to thank Rona Ambrose for her work on this important file.

We will always look for ways to stand up for survivors of sexual assault and ensure they are treated with dignity.
