Liberals and NDP Push to Extend Euthanasia to Mental Illness | Mar 9, 2021

MAID Update: (C-7, An Act to Amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying))

Today, the Bloc Quebecois have confirmed they would support the Liberal government STOPPING debate on medical assistance in dying (MAID), by using time allocation.

Mental illness as the sole underlying condition was explicitly excluded from the eligibility to access MAID under C-7 as it was introduced in the House.

MPs have NOT had the opportunity to hear from mental health advocates at committee to express their concerns on this significant expansion.

Conservatives have introduced an amendment that would protect Canadians who face mental illness as the only underlying condition from being eligible in the bill.

“In the midst of these already challenging circumstances, the government has announced their intention to expand euthanasia and assisted suicide to include Canadians whose sole condition is a mental illness.

This proposal raises major concerns. We want to share this video of a compelling personal story about why our healthcare system must not be allowed to facilitate suicide for those struggling with mental health challenges.”
