Discussing unemployment with UNIFOR | Dec 13, 2021
This morning I had a very informative meeting with Sarah McCue and Ken Kwiatkowski from UNIFOR who took the time to explain to me the far-reaching ramifications of those who are not receiving EI even though they have been laid off as a result of the pandemic or other issues.
I was particularly concerned about the parents who are not able to claim EI because of the lack of qualifying hours after taking maternity/paternity leave. Being a new parent and not having sufficient financial support is a terrible situation.
I was also reminded that those who are unemployed but do not claim EI are not included in the Unemployment Rate. This has not fallen on deaf ears!!
