A Conservative Win! | Oct 31, 2023

This week, the House of Commons has unanimously passed Bill C-280, the Financial Protection for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Farmers Act!

Sponsored by Scot Davidson, Conservative Shadow Minister for Red Tape Reduction, this legislation is a game-changer for Canadian fruit and vegetable farmers. It establishes crucial financial protection, ensuring they get paid, even when buyers face bankruptcy.

Fresh produce is highly perishable, and unpaid shipments due to buyer insolvency often result in losses for our farmers. This bill introduces a limited deemed trust to safeguard produce suppliers and prevent farm bankruptcies.

With Bill C-280, Canada’s fruit and vegetable farmers will receive fair compensation, reducing produce costs for Canadians, and bolstering our food security. Plus, it opens doors to preferential treatment for Canadian produce sellers under the United States Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act.

Common sense Conservatives are making strides for lower food prices and supporting our dedicated produce farmers.
