Canadians deserve transparency | Jun 30, 2020
I recently submitted a formal written question to the federal government through Parliament asking for clear answers on the Air Travellers Security Surcharge.
This is one of the tools Members of Parliament can use to get detailed information directly from the government and put the facts on the public record.
My question asked how much money has been collected from Canadian travellers through this surcharge, how much has actually been spent on air security, and whether any of that money was used for other purposes.
The government has now responded.
According to the figures provided, nearly $1.5 billion was collected last year, while about $1.13 billion was spent on security. That leaves a gap of roughly $368.5 million.
Canadians deserve transparency.
If a fee is being charged for security, people have every right to ask whether that money is truly being used for security.
This is exactly why written questions matter. They help hold government accountable and make sure Canadians can see the facts for themselves.
Do you think money collected from travellers for security should only be used for security?
