Russian Petroleum in Canada | March 10, 2022

Banning the import of Russian crude accomplishes nothing as Canada hasn’t imported any since 2019.

Canada does import other petroleum products from Russia; last year alone Canada bought $347 million in other petroleum products.

By not immediately banning all Russian petroleum products, the Liberal government is providing nearly $1 million a day to fund the Putin war machine. The Liberal crude oil ban is symbolic – we need real action.

Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson has indicated that the Liberal government is in the process of banning Russian oil imports but provides no timelines to when the ban will take effect.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an immediate ban on imports of Russian crude – which the government acknowledges we have not imported since 2019; but fails to provide a timeline as to when other refined Russian petroleum products will be banned.

“Even if Canada has imported very limited quantities these past years, this measure sends a powerful message,” Justin Trudeau, Feb 28, 2022
