Enbridge Line 5 Update | May 12, 2021

The governor of Michigan has issued a notice ordering Enbridge Inc. to shut down Line 5 by May 12, after terminating the easement for the pipeline.

Enbridge Line 5 has indicated it will operate Line 5 legally unless ordered to do so by a court order.

Enbridge Line 5 carries Canadian oil east, providing around half of the crude oil needs of Ontario and Quebec.

On May 11, the Canadian government filed an ‘amicus curiae’ brief in the US court case between Michigan and Enbridge, making arguments in favour of keeping Line 5 in operation. This was one of four such briefs permitted by the court for each side of the mediation. Enbridge asked for briefs from labour; business (Chambers of Commerce in Canada and four states); Attorney Generals from the states of Ohio and Louisiana; and the Government of Canada. Briefs were due May 11th, and the brief from the Government of Canada was the last to arrive, right at the deadline.

If Line 5 is shut down, 30,000 jobs are in jeopardy across Ontario and Quebec, including 5,000 jobs in Sarnia.
