July 2025 News

Declining Housing | July 31, 2025

Despite promises of “the most ambitious housing plan since WWII,” new CMHC data shows housing starts are falling—not rising.

In 2024, Canada saw 245,367 new housing starts. Now, CMHC projects that number could drop to just 212,550 by 2027—less than half of what the government promised.

Young Canadians—whether tradespeople or recent grads—are finding it harder than ever to own a home.

Conservatives will fix the housing shortage by:
-Speeding up permits
-Cutting taxes on builders and buyers
-Aligning immigration with housing capacity
It’s time to bring home ownership back within reach.

Kiwanis Sunshine Point Camp | July 30, 2025

A week of camp can boost confidence, bring new experiences, create lasting memories and establish life long friendships. The investment into youth has the potential to transform lives and change the world!

Kiwanis Sunshine Point Camp, on the shores of Lake Erie, in Harrow, has faithfully been investing in the youth in our communities for 78 years!

I was happy to join them for a fantastic lunch and a tour. It was good to see youth in their element – together with friends, enjoying good food and the great outdoors! This wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of the leadership, both the summer staff that keep things exciting and the year-round team that keeps it all afloat!

They are doing great work on a budget that relies heavily on public and private donations and government grants. If you are looking for a great place to bless with a donation, consider giving to Kiwanis Sunshine Point Camp or one of the many other camps across Essex County.

GreenShield | July 29, 2025

GreenShield – another jewel in our own backyard. You may have heard the name, but do you know the history? A company and a new standard of care developed and launched, in the 1950s, right here in Windsor!

An innovative company that invests in the communities they are in by encouraging their team to be involved in their local community, to giving charitably, as a company, and improving access to better healthcare for all Canadians.

I look forward to continuing the conversations on moving Canada forward and the sustained growth right here in Essex-Windsor!

Windsor Essex Chamber of Commerce | July 29, 2025

A very informative and important meeting with the President of the Windsor Essex Chamber of Commerce.

We discussed the challenges local small business and the automotive industry are facing.

I will continue to bring the voice of the region to Ottawa, to support them in my capacity as Member of Parliament.

Build a dream | July 28, 2025

Build a Dream. The conduit to expose young women to skilled trades.

It was a fantastic meeting with Nour and the Build a Dream Team.

We heard about the inspiration behind this movement, the successes and challenges along the way and their vision for the future. Thought provoking and inspiring.

$6.5 Billion Deficit | July 28, 2025

The Liberal government posted a $6.5 billion deficit in April and May.

That is a $2.7 billion, or 71%, increase in deficit spending compared to April-May of last year. This is despite the fact that Canadians are also being taxed more than ever, spending 42.3% of their income on taxes—more than on housing, food and clothing combined.

Conservatives would pass a dollar-for-dollar law that would find a dollar of savings for every dollar that is spent.

Fishing Adventure | July 28, 2025

A visit to Essex County isn’t complete until you’ve caught a larger fish than your boss!

It was great to fish with Rebekah, who works hard with us from our Ottawa Office!

Rising Taxes | July 26, 2025

A new report shows Canadians now spend 42.3% of their income on taxes—more than on housing, food, and clothing combined.

Since 1961, taxes have risen by 2,784%, far outpacing any other expense.

Meanwhile, deficit spending continues to grow, eroding the value of your hard-earned money.

Conservatives believe it’s time to restore balance by controlling spending and rewarding work—not punishing it.

Fort Malden Visit | July 25, 2025

Fort Malden in Town of Amherstburg is just one of the many historic locations in our community. On the banks of the Detroit River, it has been an example of the determination and resiliency of this area since the 1800’s.

I saw how Fort Malden serves as a reminder of how history helps us move forward, as it employs local students through the Canadian Summer Jobs program, and also provides volunteer and educational opportunities.

Thank you to everyone at Fort Malden for your hospitality!

Erie Shores Healthcare | July 23, 2025

It was an honour to be in the Municipality of Leamington on Monday to present certificates recognizing the incredible years of service of some of their healthcare professionals.

These individuals have been serving our community with compassion and dedication for many years and will, no doubt, continue to do so for many years to come!

Thank you to Erie Shores HealthCare for the privilege to celebrate with you!

Holstein Club Twilight Meeting | July 23, 2025

Had a great time at the Essex Kent Holstein Club’s annual Twilight Meeting!

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with local dairy farmers and hear about the work they’ve been doing this year.

Thank you to Foxland Jersey Farm for hosting this event!

Kingscoast Estate Winery | July 22, 2025

Enjoyed a sneak peak of the Kingscoast Estate Winery on McCain Sideroad in the Town of Kingsville.

Anticipating the grand opening of this beautiful new winery, with an onsite restaurant and gorgeous event spaces! Another treasure in our own back yard!

Kingsville Community Centre | July 22, 2025

It was a pleasure to attend the Kingsville Community Centre barbecue.

The Centre has been putting on weekly events for seven years! What an amazing group!

Liberal’s Out of Control Spending | July 18, 2025

StatsCan has reported that Canada has lost nearly $50 billion in investment since Mark Carney became Prime Minister.

Every single month under Carney has seen money leave our economy. March alone saw $19.8 billion gone.

Conservatives will reverse the damage with common-sense policies like the Canada First Reinvestment Tax Cut and TFSA Top-Up — to bring our money home, create jobs, and deliver powerful Canadian paycheques.

Carney’s Conflicts | July 14, 2025

Many Canadians believed Mark Carney would bring transparency and integrity. But the truth is finally coming out.

🔹 Carney told voters he owned “nothing but cash and personal real estate.”
🔹 We now know he holds 574 stock investments, including assets in Brookfield—the company he claimed he had “no connection” with.
🔹 His ethics disclosures were quietly released while he was on vacation, revealing he must recuse himself from decisions involving 100 companies—many of which still sit in his so-called “blind trust.”

Even worse?
Some of those companies—like Brookfield and its affiliates—have already lobbied his office. And many of his campaign promises directly benefit industries he still profits from.

This isn’t just about ethics. It’s about trust.

Canadians deserve a Prime Minister who puts the country first—**not one who stands to gain personally from decisions on housing, energy, and AI.

Conservatives believe elected leaders should have truly blind trusts, free of conflicts, and governed by full transparency.

It’s not too late to change direction. Let’s choose leadership that works for Canadians—not for corporations.

Essex Region Conservation | July 10, 2025

It is always good to catch up on what is going on with Essex Region Conservation.

The proposed CASO Greenway Trail, with the potential to connect the Municipality of Lakeshore, the Trans-Canada Trail and the Gordie Howe International Bridge, offers so much more than “just a trail” and opens conversations of the many ways this #Greenway could benefit the residents of Essex and our region.

Broken Immigration | July 10, 2025

The Fraser Institute released a study that confirmed what we already knew: the Liberals broke our immigration system.

Canada’s immigration system must work for everyone—newcomers and Canadians alike. We’ll invite the right people in the right numbers—those we can support with housing, health care, and jobs—so newcomers can succeed and thrive.

We’ll stop the abuse of our system. That means cracking down on fraudulent claims, ending abuse of the international student and foreign worker programs, and deporting anyone who breaks the law or overstays a visa.

Conservatives will restore order, fairness, and opportunity. We’ll ensure full security vetting, oppose radical population schemes like the Century Initiative, and help qualified newcomers work in their profession—because Canada should reward those who play by the rules and contribute.

Snider House | July 9, 2025

Thankful that the rain held off for the Municipal Heritage plaque unveiling at the Snider House.

As United Empire Loyalists, John and Elizabeth Snider fled to Canada where they settled in Colchester. Their family has maintained the family property and the home, preserving its history and sharing the generational stories from which we can learn so much.

“The farther back you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.” Winston S Churchill.

Essex Fun Fest | July 5, 2025

What an unforgettable weekend at the Essex Fun Fest! A huge thank you to the organizers for another incredible event and to everyone who came out to enjoy the parade, the festivities, and support our community—even in the extreme heat!

Team Lewis was proud to take part in the parade and represent the spirit and values of our riding. We’re always honoured to be part of such a meaningful tradition in Essex.

Check out all the fun at 👉 www.essexfunfest.com

BC Ferries | July 5, 2025

Conservatives secured an emergency committee meeting to start getting answers for Canadians on how the Liberals allowed $1 billion of Canadian tax dollars, via the Liberal created Canadian Infrastructure Bank, to bankroll BC Ferries purchasing four new ferries from the China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyards, a Communist Party state-owned enterprise (SOE).

The Liberals need to explain how they allowed $1 billion of Canadian tax dollars to outsource Canadian steel, aluminum and shipbuilding jobs to a foreign state-owned enterprise.

Taxpayers deserve assurance that their money is not indirectly supporting Communist state-owned enterprises at the expense of Canadian workers.

Canada Day Festivities | July 1, 2025

It was a beautiful day celebrating Canada Day at the Lakeshore festivities in Woodslee.

Thank you to my team, and Lakeshore residents, Monica and Shannon for attending on my behalf to bring greetings and capture some great moments of celebration!

It is the perfect time to celebrate this great country of ours. To remember our history and anticipate our future and appreciate what makes us Canadians – our strength, our resilience, our loyalty and our independence. We are the true North – strong and free. Happy Canada Day! Enjoy the celebration and stay safe!

Happy Canada Day! | July 1, 2025

Wishing everyone a safe, joyful, and memorable Canada Day with family, friends, and community.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate the beautiful country we’re proud to call home.

Chris Lewis MP - Essex
